Electroacupuncture is a special application of acupuncture, where some of the needles are constantly irritated through electric current. A relatively simple generator of constant and alternating current or combination of both is used in up to 6 pairs of needles, using different protocols of application. It is particularly used in pain management, since it is considered to enhance the analgesic effect of acupuncture.
There are different schools regarding the choice of points or the protocol of application. Historically it was first tried in France in the 19th century, when the two newly adapted methods were successfully combined. Legendary is the work of JS Han at the University of Beijing, while the book of Mayor DF. Electroacupuncture: A Practical Manual and Resource. Elsevier 2007, is considered the Bible of Electroacupuncture.
