Electro-acupuncture is a special application of acupuncture in which the stimulation is augmented through the use of electric current flowing between several, if not all, of the inserted needles. It requires a relatively simple electric generator, able to provide different wave forms of electrical stimulation. It is particularly popular as part of Western Bio-medical Acupuncture, especially indicated in the treatment of pain.
There are different schools regarding both the choice of points and the application protocol. Historically, it was first applied in France in the 19th century, when it was considered appropriate to combine the two innovative methods at the time. It has grown in popularity as part of Acupuncture Analgesia or even Anesthesia, a separate indication, possibly a little too optimistic for Western patients.
