ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON MD, MSc, PhD

The recent publication, titled “Acupuncture and Orthopedics” {in Greek} focuses on the possible incorporation of acupuncture into the daily clinical practice of all MDs in general and all Orthopedic Surgeons in particular. After all, reality confirms that pharmaceutical treatment is not enough for the entire range of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and non-pharmacological interventions are often required and definitely welcome. Predominant among those interventions is medical acupuncture, requiring a minimum of a MD, as well as a rather short initial training.

A short history of the introduction of acupuncture in the West proves to be extremely educational, as every innovation initially meets with strong resistance. Acupuncture needles are studied in detail, both in their original form (9 needles) and in their contemporary version of filliform needles. A thorough understanding of proportional measurement units, based on human parts, is required. These were developed out of necessity, but are still used by choice, as they are readily available and sufficiently accurate.

Acupuncture points are described, with an emphasis on the points that are most often encountered in diseases of the musculoskeletal system. They are described in purely Western anatomical terms, while emphasis is placed on Western-style anatomical illustrations. The aim is to fully understand the exact location of the deepest target point, as opposed to the superficial entry point of the needle, resulting in stereotactic acupuncture and full control of the tip of the needle in all 3 dimensions.

The dominant indication of acupuncture in the West is pain, with back pain being the most common, but also similar conditions, such as coccygodynia or osteoarthritis in anticipation of the final solution called arthroplasty. Furthermore, specific indications are also pointed out. Finally, a brief mention of possible side effects is deemed necessary, in order to make everyone, patients and doctors alike, aware that acupuncture requires thorough and continuous study, excellent knowledge of anatomy, focused training, correct application, but above all correct indications. Anything else is medical malpractice and should be avoided.
