George Achilles Lazarou was born in Pireaus in 1966. Graduate of Varvakeios Model School he entered Medical School, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, in 1985 and graduated in 1991.

As an MD he participated in a “Tele-medicine” seminar, organized by the Medical Physics Department of Athens Medical School, and an “Occupational Medicine” seminar organized by the Hygiene & Epidemiology Department of Athens Medical School.

He showed special interest in the study of history of medicine. He participated in the 2nd Post-Graduate Seminar for the History of Biomedical Sciences (1991-2), which eventually led to his Phd Degree in the History of Medicine Department of Athens Medical School. His dissertation “Greek Medicine in the Danubian Principalties” received a merit. A later booklet entitled “Greek Medical Presence in 17th century England”, Athens 1999 was awarded a distinction by Geroulanos Foundation at the opening ceremony of the 26th Pan-Hellenic Medical Congress.

His extra-curricular activities include martial arts training, initially karate and later on Taekwondo. He is currently a 5th degree Black Belt holder and International Instructor with the International Taekwondo Federation.

During his compulsory military service he was medical officer of a warship in the Greek Navy and he participated in the 10th Diving Medicine School, which included both theoretical education on diving pathology and practical training in diving.

One year internship in General Surgery at Metaxa Cancer Hospital, Pireaus was followed by five years internship in General Orhopedics, Children Orhopedics, Sports Medicine and Microsurgery at KAT Hospital, Kifissia. He also participated in ATLS and APLS programs.

His special interest in Osteoporosis led to his successful participation in the activities of the Laboratory for Research of the Musculoskeletal System (LRMS & www.lrms.edu.gr), Medical School, University of Athens., as well as the Hellenic Osteoporosis Foundation (www.heliost.gr) and the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism (www.eemmo.gr). He even organized a considerable number of special events for general public awareness and osteoporosis screening in the region of Northern Attica, using his own private equipment. Naturally all this led to the MSc program “Bone Metabolic Disorders”, Medical School, University of Athens and his dissertation “Pain management in chronic Low Back Pain”, Athens 2011.

An important part of pain management is acupuncture practice. He is an active member of the Scientific Association of Medical Acupuncturists in Greece (www.samag.gr) and having been certified himself, he is now actively engaged in disseminating this knowledge (www.seminariavelonismou.gr).
